Increase in Sunday race meetings at Warragul
Harness racing in Gippsland has received a boost, with a third Sunday racedate allocated to the Warragul club. In addition to the clubs successful Easter Sunday Warragul Cup meeting on April 12 2009, two other Sunday evening fixtures have been scheduled for later this year.
The club recently received its calendar of race meetings for 2008/2009, which are allocated annually on a July-June basis. There will be a harness racing meeting at Warragul on Sunday evening, October 19 (Caulfield Cup weekend).
In addition, the club will also race on Sunday evening, December 21. This is the Sunday before Christmas, and this fixture will commemorate 20 years of racing on the current Warragul Pacing Bowl circuit.
As an added bonus, one additional meeting will be staged at the Warragul track, on Wednesday, February 11, 2009. This meeting is to be conducted by the Cranbourne Harness Racing Club. Neccessary upgrade works on the Cranbourne track will commence in December, closing that venue for some three months. The clubs four race meetings in that period have been scheduled at neighbouring venues.
Warragul's popular Dual Codes day combined harness and greyhound meeting will also return on Grand Final Eve in September.
Warragul Harness Racing Club Secretary/Manager Kyle Galley says the additional Sunday fixture, and transferred Cranbourne meeting, were warmly received by the club. "Warragul has always sought extra Sunday racing, and any Sunday fixture is welcome as it gives many more members of the public the chance to attend our meetings," Galley said. "The Sunday meeting leading into Christmas promises to be a very successful event, with the club already fielding enquiries on sponsorships and dining packages for the day."
